This structure was already established as one of the biggest and most significant monasteries by the third and second centuries BC. During the 15 years that he was exiled from Anuradhapura, King Valagambahu sought protection here from South Indian usurpers. In the first century BC, the king rebuilt his capital there and turned the caves into a temple. Further additions by numerous subsequent rulers made the caverns into the important religious center they are today by the 11th century.
